" BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- China sent an emergency rescue team Wednesday evening to quake-hit Haiti, where several thousands of lives may have been claimed.
Chinese leadership expressed sympathy with and deep condolence to the Haitian people for their loss in the strongest ever quake in about 200 years in the Caribbean islands country, with which China has no diplomatic relations."

" The location and focal mechanism of the earthquake are consistent with the event having occurred as left-lateral strike slip faulting on the Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault system. This fault system accommodates about 7 mm/y, nearly half the overall motion between the Caribbean plate and North America plate.
The Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault system has not produced a major earthquake in recent decades. The EPGFZ is the likely source of historical large earthquakes in 1860, 1770, 1761, 1751, 1684, 1673, and 1618, though none of these has been confirmed in the field as associated with this fault."

" The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a magnitude 7 earthquake near Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince.
The U.S. places the epicenter 10 miles southwest of the capital. Unfortunately, the earthquake was relatively shallow at about 6.2 miles below the earth's surface. Generally. the shallower the earthquake, the worse the shaking and damage it causes."

Note: 6.2 miles depth reported by USGS - I thought I saw references made by HAARP theorists that this is somehow a magic number. I have not followed the HAARP stuff.

UPDATE FEB 7, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The military is getting ready to simulate how it would respond to a big earthquake in Alaska-"The Arctic Edge exercise starts at the end of April and runs through the first week of May."
