Commentary - The Sound of One Hand Clapping (Originally published 11/2001)

I chose this topic this month knowing it would be difficult to write about, and more so to read. The sound of one hand clapping is an expression everyone has heard, evoking the lucid ideas of great thought as it does for the young. Sounds are mapped directly into the brain, where they do their work upon the subconscious most often. In the brain, words are not sound, though in poetry, it is difficult to separate the sounds from the words, or often to decipher the words from the sound.

The sound of a the sudden flight of a thousand birds, ducks, pigeons, blackbirds in migration, a great tree when falling in the woods after having been sawn, a great waterfall, the Niagara, or the wind of a tornado, like a great freight train, which even if we've never personally heard it, we know them all instinctively, what they are, their intrinsic value and their place in our world, our own small universe.
Fathers know the sound of a crying infant. Mothers do too. These are primordial sounds, like the last gasp of death, the first cry of life, the crack of a gavel, a gunshot, a canon blast, or men when they are angry, or, imposing their awful will, like the sounds of women chatting, and sea birds in flight before a distant gale. The sound of war being rallied, in a loatheful disdain for all humanity that shares not the thought.

The sound of the first building falling September eleventh, heard through the TV set, or the glass of the second building was not something many of us had ever contemplated within the psyche of our instinct, but, the sound of the second building falling, the sound from within it, on the tenth floor, as it came down upon some, forever falling for the eternity of those many slow seconds upon those who were there, the folly, the air still in awe of the sound of an ending of personal worlds should inspire us all to contemplate the brevity of our lives, and the special beauty and wonder of all the other sounds we've heard elsewhere during our lives; the sounds of distant children laughing, playing, the crack in the voice of an elementary school teacher on her very first day teaching a class of gleeful but unruly third graders, the sound of a sporting event when great feats are being accomplished, and defeat, the sound of a hot air balloon, and its absence of sound, the sound of wind blowing through the white pine, and a young woman, a girl really, not quite a woman, calling her first love for the first time on the telephone, the sound of your own children, and your own wife, in labor, the sound of age approaching slowly, inextricably, cracking in your back, knees, neck, the sound of the first day of school, and the last, the sound of geese in an evening autumn sky, and of the sun rising brought up by the song birds of the morning, and of a blizzard howling through an opened and, then, unopened door, the moan of an unsettlingly disappointed crowd, the sound of a great factory, of great deals being made on trading floors, of carpenters hard at work, of a dog fight, and rain on a metal roof, a teenager's party, the sounds of an accomplished prank, and, politicians working a large crowd, a jet fighter breaking the sound barrier, the sound of glass breaking and your own heart, there, your own deep breathing, the lake's lapped shore, and the sound under water.

Sit still, and listen just to the sounds. You are not so young and your life for you will not last forever. Sit still and listen. Sit still, and, listen youthful and often youth-less fools. Listen well to the world's sounds during your life, and hear not just the utter foolishness man's words provide. When life is gone for any one, or for all, then, there will be nothing but to hear the sound of one hand clapping.

Thoughts On Taking Back The Country From The Miscreants

A lot of very bright people are expending a lot of time and effort proclaiming the need to take the country back, -from the crooks and the lying-thieves. Just to be right up front with where I stand, -I'm much-more for an extended period of murder-and-mayhem -than I am for electing a gaggle of goon-brained reformers.

The problem is, crooks-and-lying-thieves -is what the brightest among us -do best. These are human beings we are talking about.

Sure, sure... I know we have all heard the story of the fella -who occasionally finds tens-of-thousands-of-dollars-CASH lying in the street in a brown-paper-bag, only to waste his good fortune -by finding the bone-headed-owner of said lost property, and giving it back. But is this the sort of fella we want in Congress? OMFG no! Can you imagine how many people would line up at his door to list what they had lost? Oh my soul! Lord have mercy on us all -if we elect reformers.

This whole notion that voting should yield able, competent and somewhat honest politicians, is wafting through the air like the smell of so-much mental excrement. It ain't so. The guys who sold us this concept, should have been shot-dead when the chance availed itself. But it is too late now. The cat is out of the bag. You know the cat is out of the bag -because he just vomited all over your new bedspread.

The truth is, the country runs best with a split in the government. Whoever is in the White House should not have control of Congress. Someone has to watch the chickens getting-stolen, and be willing to squawk about it when it happens -without fear of losing their Congressional and district perks.

These reformers who are crawling out of the woodwork right now -to run for office, -they are politicians- if generally inept politicians who need what they think of as a really-big-pile-of-payola -put in front of them- before they bow-and-bend to their own personal new-found appreciation for hypocrisy. God Bless America.

The pockets of those who subvert the government are deep enough to weather the storm. They always do.

NO. No. No!

Forget about what the reformers stand for. It is mostly a lie, or bullshit in more commonly-colloquial political-parlance.

Vote out the incumbents. Get rid of John McCain and Barnie Frank. Get rid of anyone like Harry Reid. That's the American way.

And if there is any way -you can think of - something that might require calling a special election to fill the seat of some incumbent who isn't up for election this year, go ahead. Say a -Hail Mary- and pull the pin on that thing -and throw it at them with my blessings.

Good riddance to the incumbents!

Don Robertson Commentary on: "Roubini: India May Overtake China within a Year"

" Acknowledging one, I do not mean to encourage responses to my comments. I will re-focus on some obvious common misconceptions that have cropped-up, -mistakes that have the world on its current reckless course.

The dichotomy inserted between technology-and-humanity is disaffecting recognition that -humanity has been on a scientific-trial-and-error course -building frail and complex technological crutches -that have made these bloated human populations possible.

These populations are now being let adrift -due to the ongoing social collapse- crowded into conditions otherwise insufficient to maintain any of the basics of human dignity or long-term healthy-sustenance.

Our species is NOT stronger due to science. It has instead foundered in the wreckage of a compacted, fragile, scientific existence -created largely- since the Enlightenment.

This phenomenon is truncating the potential of EVERY human life. The Enlightenment-fashioned-world is NOW beset by poisonous pollutions and systemic failures of critical systems -systems created by an overly optimistic, pragmatic culture intent on aggressively cutting a dangerous path into an ever more perilous future.

Humanity ALREADY COULD BE walking-dead -thanks to science.

There is a misguided belief in the ability of some-scientific-genius to continue indefinitely solving the increasing problems arising from the previous meddling of other such tinkers. Generations of scientists -no less deluded than this generation- have meddled with an infinitely complex reality creating temporary solutions, -every one of which- has always broken down, always leaving worse problems than these efforts were meant to address.

The constantly whirring machinery of this infinitely complex Universe of reality is unforgiving of those who make too many assumptions about genius and competence.

The too often asserted god-like-proficiency is never real. We are three centuries from the Enlightenment. Planes still crash; buildings still burn; plagues still riddle our communities, and all are more deadly than before.

Because of THAT WHICH these scientists have degraded the planet, -EVEN IF- for the next three centuries it were somehow possible to make everyone cease the reckless preponderance of scientific pursuit -AND EVEN IF- humanity could reverse scientifically-enabled population trends, humanity likely could not in three centuries more -resurrect the life-sustaining potential of a single Earth continent.

We do seem doomed -to a continued scientific meddling with the planet. We seem on a highway headed to Hades -in a hand-basket -paved with our god-aspiring intentions, following directions handed-out with the assurances of genius -each- that really has no clue about what is going to turn up in the future -due to their faulty, blind assumptions.

All these scientists are individually using the world in trial-and-error experiments -conjured- as if by new-age-Gandalfs -who have the intention of creating a-cult-of-genius surrounding their individual, and absurd -god-aspiring- persona.

Altruists will say -just as if there really were a social psyche with god inspired -consciousness- "WE-ARE headed in the right direction. And science is OUR only hope."

The social psyche is a myth. -In reality- WE are just letting generations of individual pretenders PLAY GOD WITH THE WORLD.

I write not to cast a gloomy pall over this wonderful world.

I write to shed a bright light on the immorality of genius-worshiping.

Philosopher Don Robertson: Economic Solution or Revolution?

Please consider two articles as you ponder the following thoughts:

1. The Fed's New Round of Quantitative Easing Is Like Trying to Patch Leaking Pipes by Pumping in More Water -

2. US Federal Reserve takes step to boost recovery

Talking about the problem (social collapse) in this way, as if it really were an economic problem of -deficits, money supply, Ponzi schemes, ineffective stimulus programs, inflation or deflation- is ridiculous.

Ben Bernanke looks for-all-the-world like an impossibly harried little Dachshund Weiner-Dog who has learned to catch a Frisbie like a Golden Retriever. But toward what possible fruitful outcome, who can envisage?

The Bankers and Wall Street hocus-pocus men who make massive livings from behind confidential computer screens are again howling for more stimulus. SHOW ME THE MONEY!

It is just as if these swell-swindling-men believe the obsessive-compulsive moral hazard upon which their obscene 100-million-dollar-bonus-existence is predicated -is going to legitimize itself toward better approval-numbers than the 95% of Americans who were against THEM the first time everyone got gouged.

Perception is skewed in this environment of feverish anger in the lifeboats.

The common conception being bandied about implies, that if all the Boomers were again under ten years of age, -all our problems would disappear. Pshaw!

The problem is misunderstood. The REAL problem -is that all the Boomers were once UNDER ten years of age -at the same time-.

Understand that in your conceptual surroundings that make your analytic reality, and you'll suddenly see, this is NOT an economic problem.

Even if there could exist some solution-wizard, the likes of which we all see ourselves in our more vulnerable moments, -the very best we can do, is to delay the inevitable re-emergence of our re-realization of the very same problem concerning the train being off the tracks and headed mid-air down a steep embankment.

If anyone really wants to benefit from this train wreck, I would suggest they start by abandoning the conception about their reality that implies there is ANY economic solution.

Philosophy leads the way -regardless the desirableness of the direction-.

How so? Philosophers will explain very patiently, and with warm intent, -we are all feeble, groping -idiots.

Plan not for better things.

Plan INSTEAD for not letting things get any worse than they would otherwise if our attempt -to ameliorate all our personal perceptual stumbling blocks- gets the better of our foothold on this conceptual precipice from which we ridiculously dangle the belief in these fool solution-wizards of economics.

Woof, woof! -Ben Bernanke. WOOF!

Don Robertson

-----
Note: Ben Bernanke looks drugged. He reminds me of a mafia accountant - he knows everything that is going on - but has the demeanor required for the cameras - the mass media image - you know - the benign professor.

This eunuch doesn't impress me much - not that I think - as an American citizen - paying interest to the crooked Federal Reserve PRIVATE FUCKING BANK - that I have any say in the matter - but if I were in charge this clown would be sent to break big rocks into little rocks along with Alan (Basset Hound) Greenspan.

We cannot continue to follow their formula - it doesn't goddam fucking work. Look at the buying power of the dollar - you might as well show up at the supermarket with a roll of toilet paper to barter for your cat food.

Sorry for the profanity but I think Don would understand.

Imagine the cynical nature of politics today that such an image is being bandied about the Internet and on news stands all across the country, when this is not even the skinny, drug-addicted, political failure his CIA handlers -are trying to resurrect.

CHANGE! PRESTO CHANGE-O And suddenly we have a new Obama. I don't think so.

We got -CHANGE- alright. This isn't even Obama, AKA Barry Soetoro. This is Clip Art, PhotoShopped to impress the fantasies of the Ladies.

So, ladies, all you stupid fat chicks who voted for this clown, COOOL DOWN.

A Letter to a Senator: Is it Rational? Is it Radical? Is it Right?

Honorable Susan Collins

RE: The New Opium War Being Waged On America

Susan-

This lying impostor President is advancing a new drug war on our own nation, as I am absolutely sure the government is behind this new K2 drug being openly marketed over the Internet.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/11/us/11k2.html

At this treason I see no other solution than armed, open rebellion against this illegitimate government.

While you have been busy advancing the cause of a phony Homeland Security, Wall Street, the big banks, big auto, big medicine and a viciously murderous and aggressively land-grabbing Zionist colonial power in the Middle East, this impostor President has been busy debasing the moral fiber of the country's youth by waging a New Opium War upon the people of this nation.

You are acting as nothing less than Israel's whore when you call for war or sanctions against Iran, which to date has not violated the terms of the IAEA.

Get up off your knees. Wake up. Do your duty. Or resign your commission, because you are ineffective against these horrible crimes being committed in the name of the public weal.

Do your duty or wear the crown of the idiot you have become with your hair all done-up in some Washington DC beauty parlor.

You have every appearance of a rank fool.

An Open letter to the Alternative media (by Don Robertson)

The following article was written by an author I know - Don Robertson. Please read it - I'd like to know your thoughts.
---------------
John- I was listening just now when you called into Michael Rivero's What Really Happened SHOW.

Hence, this article I said I would not write, but which I have decided -to write. Unlike too many people we all know, I'm all too willing to admit -I am not infallible. LOL!

In your call to Michael, you were encouraging people to call-in to radio shows around the country to air the alternative view to climate change presented by the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and as -Al Gore divined it. LOL!

I have accused Michael Rivero of representing exactly half the problem in many matters he explores. He will be aware of my view, if he has not had that view dropped on his head like this. You are somewhat aware of my views, which must seem out in left field at times. You both serve a worthy purpose. I merely write to offer another view.

I'm comfortable out here in left field. Occasionally I catch a few fly balls. Well, -I've got my glove up, and I'm shielding the glare of the sun... I know that ball is up there -somewhere!

Hence this article I am submitting -which began right with my initial greeting given to you -opening this email. We'll call it an open letter to the alternative media.

I'm an informal guy. I have never been much impressed by myths inherent to genius, academia, humanitarianism, or any political activism that expresses itself on the political level. I followed the D.C sniper, -only wishing him bigger, more important targets.

I remember Eisenhower. I remember John Kennedy too, and Eugene McCarthy and Humbert Humphrey... I'm old guy. I knew better than to vote for that Barack Obama -fella.

I knew what was coming. Every president is worse than the previous president. Barack early on -looked like he had a high hurdle to clear. LOL!

People reading that last little paragraph will take exception to the statement. Let them.

Politically -what I fear most, is a president that really does capture what the people want. God forbid! The people are stupid.

I've also always been a know-it-all, the prerequisite for which is an unabashed willingness to be utterly wrong on occasion, if not just uh... regularly. That's me with a smile, a toothy grin, shit-eating -if you must! LOL!

When I was a kid, one of my older cousins used to call me Horny Donnie. God, I wish someone would call me that today. I've fallen in love, -literally smitten -with books though, and I'm more likely to be called four-eyes, because of some seriously specific necessity I wear my reading glasses on top of my hoary-white head.

Still, and this is the gist of what I am going to say here, I want your reading audience to consider exactly how encouraging it is to all these politicians, that one might stoop to their inane level, to debate them, or to offer evidence to the contrary of their lies.

Politicians grin like me and see the condescension as the white flag of surrender.

This unintended encouragement is easily gauged -if we examine the ongoing climate change propaganda-war.

Let me first say though, I find the environmental scientists -the worst of all scientists, a sub-class of a largess of hideously immoral fools that would meddle with the future like they were supposed be proved gods, if they don't destroy the planet in the process.

But what is destroying the planet?

The environmental scientist really proves the religious nature of all scientific work. I am not anti-religion half so much as I am anti-science. A lot kids today think what religion is doing is immoral. It may be, and certainly is in many instances. But almost universally, these same kids will say scientific work is amoral. OMFG!

I don't think anyone who worked on the theories, the actual creation of the A-bomb -or- the constantly redoubling efforts to build more of them better -is amoral. Nor do I find anyone amoral who works in any field that supports in any manner whatsoever -bio-weapons or genetic engineering.

And these stinking holier-than-thou environmental scientists, to the very last one, all of them are helping to build knowledge sets that describe exactly how to destroy the world in many-many ways.

Given what we all know about human nature, there is no other conclusion than can be made -than that these dumb bastards should know what they are doing, or, someone should point it out to them with a knuckle-sandwich right in the schnoz.

And to encourage anyone to argue this so-called science, (which when we look closely enough at the fundamental assumptions behind it -we find it is merely a gross witchcraft); such argumentation only encourages the acceptance of this witchcraft as some sort of worthy and viable science, -which it is not!

The proper way to address the global warming debate is to say, there is nothing wrong with the weather, or the climate per se. These things the weather and the climate operate according to very complex laws that are mostly beyond human comprehension, -and for human nature reasons- should remain beyond our inquiring concern.

We shouldn't be looking into such matters, for the knowledge is far too dangerous to put into the library of humanity open to the casual abuse or the utter negligence of every fool that calls himself a scientist, or a politician, -Horny Donnie, indeed!

There is everything wrong with humanity's assumption -that anyone can comprehend and ferret the truth of any such complex ideas as man-made global warming, without ever considering that there is something wrong with the scientists who made it all -so possible- in the first place. Take off the scientific blinders. I am going to punch you!

Scientists early on a few centuries ago -got an out, -based on the false notion that science is amoral. The solution as I have pointed out, is a knuckle-sandwich for these clearly nefarious scientific bastards, not cap and trade, nor even any more funding for science.

It is not global warming that is the problem at all. The problem we are experiencing everywhere in our society and throughout the world, is that our knowledge is forever incomplete in an infinitely complex reality. We cannot possibly understand these things well enough to try and do something about such complex beasts as these scientists create for us, like global warming or swine flu or the credit crisis.

There are enough stout men in the world -who might be better encouraged to level a few of these pretenders, pretenders to these rapidly multiplying and wholly fallacious scientific thrones, environmentalist, economist, physicist, genetic engineer... The despicable list goes on.

The world was good enough before global warming, and before whatever scientific thing it is that these scientific shaman are trying to blame for their global warming.

Just like when Treasury Secretary Paulson came out and told us, it would be the end of the world -if we didn't give him 700 billion dollars to play with, --all these scientists, whatever their ilk, should have their balls kicked hard enough up through their stomachs so that when they try and speak again, they can do no more than mumble.

Buy a gun. You're likely going to have to use it.

A Book Review: The New Epistemology of Morality and Truth by Don Robertson

I don't know where to begin. The very mention of philosophy, let alone Epistemology, almost guarantees audience abandonment - unless the audience consists of philosophers I suppose. But wait - we are all philosophers to some degree - since philosophy springs from our natural sense of wonder (Plato?).  So we all practice philosophy to some extent. But as citizens and human beings - does each of us really do as much as we should be doing?  Perhaps this review of Don Robertson's book The New Epistemology of Morality and Truth will:

1. Demonstrate the relevance of this seemingly obscure topic to the "real world" of the reader.
2. Provide a fair analysis with a critical eye.

Before I discuss the book I think it is fair to give some background on myself so the reader can decide whether or not to assign value to my observations and opinions regarding this philosophical topic. I admit that I am interested in philosophy - and that my interest led to study focused mainly on Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Some of my ramblings can be found on this blog. So let's begin.

My first impressions of the book itself, The New Epistemology of Morality and Truth:

1. Epistemology? I have to look that up. Does this have something to do with religion?
2. Who is the woman depicted in the cover art? The look on her face reminds me of the expression on my own wife's face each time I bring up philosophical topics. Could this cover art portray Don's poor wife as he discusses philosophy for the umpteenth time? I'm joking.
3. Morality and Truth? Good luck! I can't wait to see this! Define morality? Define Truth?
4. Who came up with this title? It can't be someone trying to generate reader interest - can it?

So I began by looking up Epistemology. Yes, I admit it, I didn't know the definition so according to my Apple dictionary:

epistemology |iˌpistəˈmäləjē|
noun Philosophy
the theory of knowledge, esp. with regard to its methods, validity, and scope. Epistemology is the investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion.

In other words - how do we know that which we believe is true - really is? So this is not an obscure or impractical subject - quite the opposite - Epistemology is an uncommon word for what should be a common act. This is what this book is all about. This is a book not just for the philosopher - but for everyone. It is a wake-up call, a challenge for all of us - to think very critically about everything we think we know. Why? Because unless we examine our assumptions we cannot find where we are mistaken - limiting ourselves to a world painted for us by artists with agendas - rather than a world we've done our damnedest to verify.  Whether buying a new car, voting, or evaluating the validity of the latest world crisis fed to us via TV - we must individually get to the facts.  But how does The New Epistemology of Morality and Truth help us get from where we are now to where we need to be? And why should we bother?

Don Robertson's book begins by blazing a trail right through the heart of academia - mincing no words - sparing no one. He sets an example for iconoclasts and critical thinkers - in a way that is blunt enough to get through the thickest of skulls - even my own. He removes all shame from the act of doubting anyone and everything - he leads by example. Whether you agree with him or not - it is refreshing to me, at least, to read something so free of ulterior motive. But the author must have some motive right? For sure.

I can't speak for the author, only myself, but I detect that the motive of the book is to improve the human condition. Don Robertson has provided his "Moral Imperative of Life" as a guide toward this end. It is:

"The moral imperative of life is to live a life that detracts not at all from the lives available to those who will follow us into this world."

This concise rule is the author's distillation of much thought and study - brief, to the point, and in my opinion a damned good idea. Much elaboration is provided hashing out the details so the reader can understand fully the author's viewpoint. Toward the end of the book we find more valuable contrarian ideas - good ideas that need to be heard. Ideas about the power of the individual and how we can exercise that power.

I found The New Epistemology of Morality and Truth an excellent book and highly recommend it to all readers - especially readers who vote. This book is unique in that the blunt honesty removes all preconceived notions the reader may have right off the bat - worrying not about hurting anybody's feelings. Although at first glance it may seem harsh, the persistent reader will find that the brutal honesty saves much time - since the reader can forget author's motives and focus on the subject matter. I wish more books were so proudly politically incorrect.

Finally - I must offer one critical point regarding the "Moral Imperative of Life." How can anyone know that the consequences of their actions will indeed turn out for the good? Often a person will take action they think will do exactly as stated by the Moral Imperative - but it seems to me there are always unknowns that will limit homo sapiens. For example a friend sent me a parable describing a man watching a moth/butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon. He thought that by doing some of the work for the creature, helping get the cocoon out of the way for it, relieving the creature of this struggle, that he was doing good. But what he didn't know was that this struggle was necessary for the creature to inflate it's wings. In the end he harmed the creature. So it goes with the moral imperative - there is no way to be sure that our actions will result in good due to the unknown.

However - despite the above criticism - we must be bold - we must try - we must exercise our personal power without fear. And this is what this book is all about - to think about what we do, why we do it, what knowledge we base our actions on, how any self-proclaimed expert can claim to know the truth more than we can  - and how we can leave this world a better place than we found it for those who follow.  What could be more important?
