In the article at least one parent said he'd not allow his kid to go to the prom if this were true and not a hoax.

My gut tells me that most Americans are just too numb to react much even if it were true - and I suspect if it weren't a hoax there are many that would rationalize some reason to submit.  Kinda' like rationalizing torture.
